Things your dog should never eat

You know that feeling when you are having a meal and suddenly you spot a headline which makes you wanna puke? Happens to me all the time. However this time I am talking about a specific topic, related to sharing the food with your dog. So in this case vomiting would actually be the only right thing to do. If you can teach your dog to do that.

My dog Sky thinks everything I eat is gold. She keeps on staring at me with those deep brown “feed-me-mommy” eyes so I can hardly resist giving her a small piece of my meal in the end. She eats everything – from healthy bites like apples, carrots, yogurts and protein bars to “main stuff” like risotto, fish, macaroni and potatoes, as long as it comes from my plate. The only thing she doesn’t want is dog food. Actually I bet if I ate those stinky kibbles she would change her mind about them as well.

I am not a very organized and strict owner, however when it comes to feeding my dog I try to stick with three things:

  1. She gets her breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening, always at approximately the same time. (Which is actually when I wake up and when I have dinner. I mean, I am not a robot, right?)
  2. If she gets snacks during the day, I cut down her meals proportionally. (She is a Chihuahua and she’s a lady so she has to look good and keep fit.)
  3. She always gets food after I finish eating. Just so she knows who is the master. (I am just playing tough. The truth is that it hurts like hell when she sits beside the table looking up like the most starving creature in the world).

Chihuahua in the kitchen

But those are just educational measures. There are far more important things you should consider when feeding your dog. Like all those DON’T-s which should be crossed out of your dog’s menu for good. Like avocado, which I almost choked on yesterday when I saw the headline.

So I did a quick research on the internet and some of the information came as a big surprise to me. Especially since I thought I was doing my dog a healthy favor! So I am really thankful I did a little digging for my little treasure before it could be too late.

I found these key DON’T-s that you guys should delete from your pet’s diet. They are in a random order, and I underlined the ones which sound most dangerous:

  • Avocado

This one knocked me over. I eat avocado almost every day and Sky loves it. It is supposed to be rich in all kinds of nutrients. For humans, at least. But the fact is that avocado contains persin which can be toxic to dogs when eaten in large amounts. Persin is in the leaves, seed, and bark and the fruit itself. It can cause upset stomach, breathing difficulties and fluid buildup in the chest.

  • Mushrooms

Not all the mushrooms are health hazard, but are you really an expert to tell them apart? Some are only dangerous when mixed with other ingredient. On top of that the signs of mushroom poisoning can take a few days to show up. So it’s complicated. Rather avoid them all.

  • Raw eggs

We all know there is a chance of food poisoning from Salmonella or E. coli if we eat raw eggs. The same goes for dogs. And there are also potential skin / coat problems because raw eggs contain enzyme which interferes with the absorption of some B vitamins.

  • Raw meat and fish

Raw meat and fish can contain bacteria, that causes food poisoning. Some fish species (like salmon or trout) can contain a parasite that causes “fish disease” also known as salmon poisoning disease. The disease can be fatal within 2 weeks if not treated immediatelly. The first signs of illness are vomiting, fever and big lymph nodes. That doesn’t mean you should deny your dog a fish – just cook it thoroughly.

  • Persimmons, peaches and plums

The seeds from persimmons as well as the pit from a peach or plum can cause inflammation of the small intestine in dogs or intestinal obstruction. I was surprised to learn that peach and plum pits contain cyanide, which is poisonous to humans and dogs. So even though it looks cute, don’t even think about letting your dog play with them.

  • Chocolate

I know dogs are crazy about chocolate. I mean who isn’t? Unfortunately chocolate contains theobromine. Sometimes even licking it can cause a dog to vomit and have diarrhea. It can also cause abnormal heart rhythm, seizures and lead to death. And remember: the darker the chocolate, the more toxic for your dog!

  • Grapes and raisins

From unknown reason grapes and raisins can cause rapid kidney failure.  Even a very small amount can make a dog ill. Usually the signs are repeated vomiting and diarrhea, followed by dehydration and lack of appetite. Death from kidney failure may occur within three to four days!

  • Macadamia nuts

Did you know that only six macadamias are enough to make your dog ill? The nuts contain some toxic things (not yet established) which lead to muscle tremors, weakness or paralysis, vomiting, elevated body temperature, and rapid heart rate.

  • Onion and garlic

Onions and garlic can destroy dogs’ red blood cells, causing them to become weaker and move around less. Dog will get tired and reluctant to move. His urine will become orange to dark red. In severe cases he will need a blood transfusion.

  • Salt

Eating too much salty food can lead to sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and seizures. It may even cause death.

  • Xylitol

This popular sweetener which contributes to maintaining healthy teeth with humans is unfortunately not good for your pet. It can cause dog’s blood sugar to drop and can also cause liver failure, just in a few days. So be careful where you leave your chewing gum, candies or even some diet foods which are sweetened with xylitol.

  • Coffee/caffeine

Caffeine can be fatal in large quantities. And not only coffee, caffeine can also be found in cocoa, chocolate (which is already a don’t), colas and energy drinks. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations and even death. And there unfortunately is no antidote 🙁

  • Milk and Cheese

Milk, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products contain sugars and fatty components that dogs don’t have the enzymes to break down. So if your dog eats too much of this stuff, he might suffer from gas, diarrhea and vomiting. And we all know the feeling when your dog farts, right? 🙂

  • Bacon and fat trimming

Yep, you heard me. Her majesty, the Bacon. And all the fat you cut from meat that you don’t want to eat. Well, if it’s not good for you it shouldn’t be good for your dog as well. Foods which contain a lot of fat can lead to pancreatitis which leads to problems with digestion and nutrient absorption.

  • Kitchen shelves

Not literally, but your dog can easily get poisoned from what is on them. Baking powder, baking soda, spices … and also raw yeast dough (the one which is waiting to be baked) can become toxic while fermenting in a dog’s stomach.

At last but not the least, use your common sense and follow this very simple rule: Don’t feed your dog with anything that is bad for you. You know, like raw potato, fish and chicken bones which can get stuck in the throat… And do I need to say anything about alcohol? No, because if you are reading this article, you are a responsible pet owner. And I like you for that 🙂

Kakorkoli, stereotipi so, stereotipi bodo, klinc jih gleda.

Če ste prespali teoretični del vozniškega izpita in če niste ravno ljubitelj branja zakonov (48.

Shopping in the USA

My first trip to the USA was to New York, Manhattan, about 15 years ago, when I was accompanying my boyfriend on a short business trip (paying my own plane ticket with a student money may I add). I was so busy being excited to see the Big Apple, I couldn’t even think of planning any tourist activity. Honestly, at that age, all I cared about was to see the Statue of Liberty and to experience the legendary shopping in the USA. Which means to shop until I drop. And, as they say, the rest is history.

I have been returning to the States almost every year since then, to different places, and every time I make sure that I come back home with an overweight suitcase, carrying at least one new bag in my hand, wearing 4 layers of clothes and 2 extra shoes which didn’t fit in my luggage.

4 reasons why I love shopping in the USA

1. Prices

Currently the exchange rate is not so much in favor of European shoppers (it has been drifting around 1.10 – 1.15 for almost a year now), however with bigger purchases your wallet can still feel the difference. I did have some big saving moments across Atlantic: on my first visit the exchange rate was around 1.30 and at some point it reached up to 1.5, so yeah, that was heaven. But anyway, the fact is that when you go shopping in the USA you go for American brands which are logically cheaper “at home” than in the rest of the world. Not to mention ongoing instore sales and promotions which are sometimes a real bargain. So in the end of the day, at least until the rate reaches 1 : 1 (which I pray it never does, even though I am not religious) you save twice. Trust me, once you see the price of Guess jeans, Calvin Klein shoes, Michale Kors handbag or Ralph Lauren sweater in the USA, you will never want to buy it at home again. At least not at a regular price.

Premium Outlets shopping

2. Variety

Probably this has a lot to do with the fact that I come from a very small country with two or three big shopping centers where American brands like Guess, Calvin Klein or Tommy Hilfiger are considered as quite premium stuff. I mean don’t get me wrong – Italian and French designers are considered as high end class in Slovenia as well, but USA brands are very popular and relatively expensive. So when a girl like me sees those factory outlets laying around the USA like coffee shops, with a variety of sizes, colors and models, not to mention promotions, she just can’t stop smiling. Even if in the end of the day her back hurts like hell 🙂

3. Returns

If you are an impulsive buyer and especially if you have a habit in making the wrong shopping choices, USA is the place for you. I am not sure if this is the law or just a very healthy common practice but everything you buy can be returned with a full refund, usually within 30 days or even more. This can also come very handy if you are in a hurry and don’t have time to try all those clothes or shoes. I am telling you, USA is every shopper’s paradise. Land of the free. Well, at least from shopping point of view.Miami Beach

4. Experience

Unless you are loaded it is very unlikely that you will travel to the USA just for shopping. If you are flexible with dates, you can find some very good deals from European airports. (You can read my post about booking a flight and some useful travel tips here). If you can afford to spend more than 14 days, take the West coast road trip from San Francisco to San Diego (been there, done that, the post will follow sooner or later), or head East in Los Angeles towards Las Vegas ad Grand Canyon. For 10 days I would recommend a roundtrip to Florida starting from Daytona Beach to fabulous Key West during winter or the East coast triangle Washington – Niagara Falls – New York in the summer. OR you can just drop by for an extended weekend, like I do from time to time 😛 Call me crazy but for me visiting the USA is worth the jet lag anytime.

My favorite shopping places in the USA

Here are my top 4 “must go” shopping places which almost never let me down.Premium Outlets

Premium Outlets

I discovered this shoppers’ paradise during my first trip to Orlando, Florida and since then every time I plan my vacation in the USA, I make sure that Premium Outlets are somewhere on my way. Which is not very hard because their centers are located in almost every state. This giant group of outlets covers some other shopping mall brands (like Simon Mall and The Mills) and you can check their locations here. Premium outlets are my favorite and I practically know every corner in there. My tour starts with Guess, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren where I usually find everything I want. They have food courts in every center with a variety of international cuisines and if the center is big enough you might run into some healthy choices as well. No need to replace those calories lost in shopping with saturated fats, right? After lunch I go for shoes and sports stuff and in the evening, that is if my legs can still carry me, I check perfume and other cosmetics shops. So yes, I take the whole day for shopping here and every time I finish my back hurts like hell. But this is a happy pain of a shopaholic 🙂

Hint: before you visit Premium Outlets make sure you register online for VIP membership so you can get a book of coupons and discounts. Sometimes the deals are quite awesome.

Victoria’s Secret

Every woman needs a secret. Many of them. Actually the more the better. Of course I am talking about those fabulous pieces of lingerie and accessories represented by human angels with perfect figures and a job to die for. And the “secret” is very simple: women need to buy these promises. We need to think we will look gorgeous in those tiny panties as well. And YES, we need A LOT of time to check each and every piece in that store. So guys, if you are by any chance reading this: be patient. Go outside for a drink. Find an Apple store. Go for another drink. If you are lucky, she will be outside within one hour. But my guy knows better. After I kept him waiting in front of the Victoria’s Secret store in Miami for 2 hours and a half…. well, at least now he knows what to expect. So no more fighting over this one 🙂

Hint: don’t get excited when a shop assistant asks you if you want to get the Angel card – unless you are from the USA and have social security number, you cannot get it. But sometimes they give away discounts with your next purchase or free gifts with a purchase over $50 or $100. Check for promotions before you reach your wallet 😉

Ross

If you judge by the first impression when entering the store with a big blue sign Ross Dress for Less you will probably want to turn around and walk away. But don’t. Ross is a big retail chain with huge discounts on renowned brands. If you want to get good deals you will need some patience because the clothes are stored very confusing with hangers crowded like in a fish can. But Ross says: “We believe in “no frills”—no window displays, mannequins, fancy fixtures or decorations in our stores so we can pass more savings on to our customers.” So be patient and try it. What have you got to lose?

Hint: you will be surprised to see that Ross offers much more than just clothes so consider taking the shopping trolley. And keep in mind you can only take up to 6 pieces to the fitting room at once. Headache, I know.Macy's

Macy’s

And I am not just talking about any Macy’s. I am talking about THE Macy’s on 151 West 34th Street, Manhattan. Maybe because it was my first “shop until you drop” experience or maybe just because it is one of the largest department stores (if not the largest) in the USA. If you are shopping for clothes and accessories, you have 7 or 8 floors at your disposal (other floors are for home décor, gifts and kitchen stuff). The store is indeed huge and you might easily get lost. Fortunately they have free Wi-Fi so you can Skype your significant other because it is very likely you will separate if one of you is on a shopping mission. By the way, Macy’s has a lot of promotions going on and they change it every couple of days. So if you see a good opportunity take it because it might not be there tomorrow.

Hint: take your passport or ID with and present it at Visitor’s Center. Every tourist gets a discount card with 10% off everything. Just lovely. And if you are visiting Macy’s in New York, you can find about how to prepare for your visit to New York in this post

So this is my 5 cents on shopping in the USA. Add the rest and you are on the way. Just one last time: you might get hooked. You have been warned 😉

Hotel Review: Fresh hotel, Athens (Greece)

For my second business trip to Athens I wanted to experience the pulse of the city center so I decided to stay somewhere around Monastiraki square. There were quite a few options to choose from within my budget and I decided to go for Fresh hotel after having a quick chat with my friend who works in a local tourist agency. She told me that her customers usually love this hotel and the location is also very convenient.

The rooms

I booked a double bed room with a small balcony hoping to get some nice view of the streets. When I entered the room I immediately smelled the smoke from cigars, which I believe was coming from the hallway. I am not sure how this is possible because the whole hotel is supposed to be non-smoking. I called the reception to be moved to another room and a very kind guy came immediately to escort me to a higher floor. Unfortunately a higher (3rd) floor did not offer better view – I am not sure if this hotel offers any nice views at all, since it is located in the middle of some tall buildings. Which are not a sight for sore eyes as well. There was an ashtray on the balcony though so I kind of got my answer to the smoking issue.

Fresh hotel Athens room

The room was relatively small, however just about enough what I needed. The bathroom is very “fresh”, with some nice design features like the pipes being set on the walls directly. Unfortunately the architect has adopted British cold-hot water system, so you have to adjust the temperature from both handles. Which. Is. A. Headache.

The bed is a bit hard but fortunately you get to choose from different types of pillows, so this is a winner. Also a big high five for the plugs being set right next to the bed.

Hotel facilities

The lobby is very stylish, but quite small. The staff at the reception is very kind and always at your service. The breakfast lounge is in the first floor while the main restaurant with daily bar is located on the rooftop (9th floor). The hotel description promises to offer wonderful views of Acropolis from there, however don’t get too excited. You can actually see a small part of the hill from two or three locations, but this is not even close to the views from Athens Gate hotel where I stayed during my previous visit. Fresh hotel does however offer a small swimming pool on the rooftop and if you are lucky enough to be first on the set you might actually enjoy it. Although I cannot imagine myself laying under the Athens sun from June to August. Not even under umbrellas.

Fresh hotel Athens pool

The gym is located on the 8th floor but honestly I didn’t check it. I stayed at the hotel for only 2 nights and I did quite a lot of walking so I didn’t feel too guilty about it 😉

Dining

Breakfast choice is very good, from freshly squeezed orange juice to variety of cold and hot dishes. My friend told me that food in the hotel was supposed to be delicious as the staff learned a few tricks from Jamie Oliver while he was staying there. I am not sure if that is true, however I didn’t have the opportunity to check other meals. I guess dinner on the rooftop wouldn’t be a bad idea if you stay in Athens for several days. But honestly there are so many delicious restaurants between Monastiraki and Syntagma square that you will probably want to taste them as well. I did have a few smoothies on the rooftop and they were delicious. Also the staff up there is very professional.

Fresh hotel Athens rooftop bar

Location

Fresh hotel is located a very short walk from Monastiraki center so I guess you could say the location is convenient. On the other hand they say everything in Athens is within a walking distance. You can also reach Acropolis on foot from the hotel, it took me only about 15 minutes of slow walk.

The close neighborhood itself however is not considered as one of the safest. When I was looking to buy some bottled water to bring with me in my room, I went right on Sofokleous street and I can confirm that was not a pleasant experience at all. I am hardly ever afraid of walking alone on the streets, but when you see a bunch of strange men in front of every door and around every corner, staring at you like you are intruding their world, it can get a bit scary. Only later I was told by my business partners there a lot of thefts in that area in the evening and that I should be careful.

Anda’s rate: 8 from 10

Bottom line

I know that Fresh hotel has very good guest reviews so I kind of feel guilty for pointing out some of its weaknesses however I cannot get rid of the feeling that something was missing. This is probably because I stayed in Athens Gate a few months ago and the experience there was really amazing. All in all if you get a reasonable price I can definitely recommend it because there was nothing actually wrong with my stay.

The gem of Indian ocean: Mahe island, Seychelles

I still remember Miss World contest in 1998, when everyone was staring at gorgeous women, striving for peace on Earth, while my eyes were glued on those magnificent rounded rocks, white sandy beaches and crystal clear ocean in behind. Since then Seychelles had been somewhere on my mind but yet far enough to be saved for this special occasion. Meanwhile I was lucky enough to visit Dominican Republic, Cuba, Turks and Caicos Islands, Bahamas, Maldives and some other beautiful beach destinations, but when looking back it seems to me those were only small steps to reach the “grand finale”. Don’t get me wrong – all previously mentioned destinations are fantastic and I know there are many more ocean pearls to be discovered, but one thing is for sure: Seychelles were more than worth waiting for.

Booking a flight

A lot of people are still wondering whether booking a flight is something they should entrust to a travel agent or do by themselves. I am not here to convince you that only one option is good because it is not. Travel agencies are believed to be a safer option, but then again who will vouch for you if they go bankrupt? This shit happens, you know. Furthermore, the agencies don’t work for free, so be prepared to pay some extra money. At last but not the least, if you are not sure about the destination or the dates of your travel and prefer some flexibility, then perhaps it is better not to waste their time. Eventually they will stop trying. So, if you are wondering if it is safe to book a flight ticket online by yourself, how to get the best price, what happens if your flight gets cancelled etc., you came to the right place.
